Affordable, Ethical, Sustainable Clothing Brands

If I can’t repair clothing I have nor find clothing I need in thrift shops, I’m going to shop from the affordable, ethical, and sustainable clothing brands below (plus these Canadian brands). It’s how I replenish my minimalist capsule wardrobe—I only buy items I need and love, in light layers, that easily mix and match, that can be dressed up or down, and that fit in my packing cubes. When I upgrade, I donate what I’m replacing. I appreciate that nearly any style of clothing can be made more sustainable now. I buy less and pay fair wages—for quality, for ethical and sustainable clothes—so all can afford to live. I almost always shop sales, buying in bulk when truly needed (six new undies to replace six tattered undies).

• organic cotton helps me say no to GMO seeds, fungicides/insecticides, synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, chemicals for defoliation, plus it’s naturally biodegradable

• linen and hemp are often touted as naturally organic (even better when certified organic), antibacterial, breathable, and biodegradable fabrics

• tencel is supposedly a renewable plant fiber made in an environmentally responsible process, certified compostable and biodegradable (here’s why I avoid bamboo whenever possible)
