BY ACCIDENT, WHILE STARVING
I found myself standing in line at Whole Foods, trying to order a veggie burrito, but without the burrito wrap. Because wheat wraps cannot be consumed when one must avoid gluten.
To bypass the wheat wrap, Whole Foods offered to place all of the other veggie burrito ingredients into a rectangular take-out box (turning a veggie burrito into a veggie burrito bowl). You know that rectangular container you normally fill up with various food bar items, then pay $10 or $15 for it, after it's been weighed?
WELL, SINCE I WAS ALSO DECLINING THE MEAT
The total for my veggie burrito bowl was only $6 ($2 cheaper than the $8 price on the menu). I was charged just $6 for the entire plant-based meal—the most affordable plant-based meal I've ever purchased at Whole Foods.
So we've started eating this meal often, while traveling. It's quick to order, healthy, easy to eat on the road, and it keeps us to our time schedules. Because, otherwise, we happily meander around Whole Foods all day long.
Sometimes Whole Foods' employees do not know about the $6 option, or understandably forget to label it $6 (because they're very busy labeling it $8 most of each day). When that's happened, I've always just inquired about what the veggie burrito bowl price should be, and they've then corrected it back to $6.
THE SAVINGS THAT KEEPS ON SAVING
If one were to buy this meal every day, one would save $60/month ($2 x 30) by ordering this healthy veggie burrito bowl (instead of a meat burrito bowl). As long as one ensures it's labeled/priced correctly. That's a savings of $730/year. Or a cost of $2190/yr to eat this healthy meal once/day.
Also, since people often believe it's cheaper to eat fast food, let's look at the fast food meal that I (in my past life) frequently ate: Big Mac ($5.49), large fry ($2.89), and chocolate shake ($3.99). That's $6.37 more/meal to eat fast food. Or a cost of $4515.05/yr to eat this fast food meal once/day.
A Whole Foods meal is cheaper!
I ESPECIALLY LOVE
I especially love to order this healthy veggie burrito bowl at the Whole Foods locations where they offer mashed sweet potatoes/yams as one of the ingredients (maybe that's only around holiday time?). I swear, it should be offered year-round, at all stores. It turns this meal into a decadently sweet lunch and dessert, all in one. It is truly exquisite!
AND GUESS WHAT?
Whole Foods has just turned their Burrito Bar into a Taqueria.
I noticed two lovely changes: The menu now highlights vegan ingredients and Whole Foods now nestles this meal into a beautiful oval recyclable container.
PLUS A LITTLE ECO TIP:
While one is saving their money, their health, sweet animals and our beautiful earth by eating this veggie (meat-free) meal...
One can also decline the lid, to avoid using plastic!
